Hartman Tutoring, owned by the mother-son duo of Alice and Jesse Hartman, was founded in 1986 in lower Manhattan. Prior to that, Alice and her husband Kenny were two of the founding teachers at The Village Community School, where the two of them taught for over two decades. When Kenny passed away in 1991, Alice decided to adjust her role as an educator from classroom teacher to tutor, allowing her to be home with her two young children. In 2004, Jesse joined his mother as partners in business, and the two set out in an effort to provide NYC’s children with the best one-on-one academic support possible.
Alice began teaching in 1966 after graduating college with a degree in Elementary Education and earning her MA degree in Early Childhood/Elementary Education. She has been educating children ever since. She has taught in public and private schools and was one of the founding teachers at the Village Community School in Manhattan. After her second child was born, Alice left the classroom and began her tutoring service.
In 2006, the Downtown Express named Alice the “Best Tutor in Downtown Manhattan.” In 2015, Hartman Tutoring celebrated its 30th anniversary. Alice is currently creating a series of books for middle school test preparation and is also developing a line of educational video games for children.
Jesse became the co-owner of HT at the age of 24, and has over 15 years of tutoring experience. As a student at Emory University, Jesse worked part-time as an SAT tutor/teacher while pursuing a degree in philosophy. He soon realized his goal of reaching the youth as more than a teacher, but as a mentor and academic guide. Jesse has tutored in nearly every subject and prepared students for nearly every standardized test available.
He is currently the Director of HT, and continues to inspire and engage students in NYC, while pursuing his M.S. Ed at Bank Street College. Jesse is an accomplished poet and lyricist, having published various collections which have received national recognition.
After graduating with Honors from Wesleyan University, Sam Ubl was hired to teach in the Lower School at Saint Ann’s in Brooklyn Heights. There he taught first and third grade while tutoring children in a wide range of academic subjects. As a classroom teacher, Sam developed unique curricula on various topics, including architecture, food, and comedy.Sam loves the challenge of helping kids build confidence and attain success. He believes in the value of shaping his teaching approach to the nuances of a student’s personal interests and learning style.
Sam has written music criticism for Pitchfork, the Village Voice, and the Boston Phoenix. As a drummer and songwriter, music continues to play a central role in his life.

FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS
We are a family-owned group of educators, and we view our students as an extension of our family. Our staff members are experienced teachers and tutors, meticulously trained and completely committed to helping children not only succeed academically, but enjoy the journey, as well.
We aim to eliminate stress, maximize ability and keep parents as informed and involved as possible. We’re here to help in any way we can, from the ABCs to the SATs.
OUR INTAKE PROCESS
Families begin the process by meeting with an HT Director for a consultation, either online or at our Manhattan office. This is an opportunity to answer questions and outline details of the adventure to come. The consultation is immediately followed by an assessment with the student, allowing us to make an ideal pairing amongst our esteemed staff of tutors and coaches for ongoing sessions.
